Plan your fitted kitchen yourself or hire a professional?

Online kitchen planners make it easy to click your dream kitchen together on screen. But between the plan and the finished kitchen lie measurements, connections and many millimetres that decide the result. We show which steps you can easily handle yourself and where a specialist makes the difference.
What you can easily plan yourself
Nobody knows your cooking habits better than you. So the basic decisions are best made by you:
- Kitchen layout: single run, L-shape, U-shape or with an island
- Workflow: sink, hob and fridge should be a short distance from each other
- Storage: how many pull-outs, tall units and wall cabinets do you really need?
- Design: fronts, handles, worktop and lighting
Where planning it yourself often reaches its limits

Most planning mistakes happen when measuring. Walls are rarely perfectly straight and corners rarely exactly square — especially in older buildings. Just a few millimetres of deviation decide whether the worktop fits or a gap remains.
The position of the existing connections is just as important: water, waste water and sockets determine where the sink, dishwasher and hob can sensibly go. Also watch out for window sills, radiators and the exact installation dimensions of the appliances.
Connections: a job for the professional
Connecting an electric cooker to a high-voltage supply should always be done by a qualified electrician. New water or waste pipes are laid by the plumber. Connecting the sink and dishwasher to existing angle valves and drains is usually handled by the kitchen installers.
Clarify before the installation date who handles which connections — that avoids waiting around with a half-finished kitchen.
The best mix: plan it yourself, have a professional install it

Many of our customers plan their kitchen themselves or with the kitchen retailer and leave checking the measurements and the installation to us. That way you keep control of the design while the cabinets, worktop, cut-outs and fronts are fitted professionally.
Have your plan checked on site before ordering. A quick look at the walls and connections often saves expensive reorders.
